A03 Bowls
Bowls
Introduction
I started playing bowls when I was 11 and have been only doing it for a year. I found it quite hard at first but then I got the hang of the game after a while. I will like to play Bowls when I am older in my spare time as it is a fun sport to do. I have not done any competitions and I don’t really plan on doing any. I go to a small place at White oaks with my mum sometimes to have a small game.
Session 1
Firstly I and my family played three practise rounds with a short, a medium and long jack. After the practise rounds I had learned that I need to make my bowl shorter. I also need to bring a tape measure with me to measure the length of the distance between bowl and the jack. We then played a game for 18 ends and decided we would break at 9 rounds. At half time the score was 4 to me, 6 to my dad and 4 to my mum. After the break I decided I needed to work on the length that I rolled the bowl and how I used the bias. I was making the bias not turn far enough and the bowl was just going straight. At the end of all the rounds it was 9 to me, 11 to dad and 7 to mum. My dad won the match because he used the bias correctly, got his length mostly correct and controlled how much power he had on the ball. I learnt that I need to work on my power that I use on the ball because I always end up in the gutter at the end.
This me putting up the jack.
Session 2
At this session we started with 3 practise goes with a short, a long and a medium jack. I was most comfortable with the medium jack and had better success with the long jack than the short jack. We decided that we would record how close my bowls were to the jack. We played 18 ends and only played one way. I was focusing on trying to get my bowls as close to he jack as possible not just trying to win the game. After 14 ends I had 14 different results, some of them were medium but most of them of them were short or long. My parents went to have a break while I had one last practice go. This is when I got my shortest bowl which was 71cm. After I had a break we resume play and I got 4 more measurements. I also tried bowling using the left handed way with my right hand. I found this easier for a time but realised that it was no different than the other hand. After the last round we handed back the bowls and went home.
Here is a table showing how close I got to the Jack.
Short | Medium | Long |
127cm | 175cm | 432cm |
137cm | 171cm | 457cm |
118cm | 148cm | 196cm |
99cm | 173cm | 262cm |
115cm | 272cm | |
82cm | 182cm | |
I had a practice and got 71cm | 217cm |
This is me sending my bowl up and watching it.
This is me in my practise standing next to my closest bowls This is me standing next to my second closest bowl.
Lesson plan for Practice 3rd December
Firstly I am going to do a warm up by rolling up the jack and then send up four bowls a few times. I will then put up a short, medium and long jack four times and send four bowls up each time. I will then measure the closest ones in the practice and record them. I will then see what was my weakest jack and practice it. I will then get my second weakest jack and practice that. If I have time at the end I will do a short, a medium and a long jack and record what the differences are in my results. For my short and medium jacks I recorded all the bowls that were less than 160cm away from the jack. For the long jack everything under 300cm.
Length of Jack | Short | Medium | Long |
1st attempt | 97cm | 110cm, 138cm | 285cm, 290cm |
2nd attempt | 23cm and 126cm | 126cm | 196cm |
3rd attempt | 106cm | 30cm | 260cm |
4th attempt | 155cm | 38cm | 154cm, 192cm |
5th attempt | 53cm | All over 150cm | 163cm |
Evaluation
I found it very tiring and by the end of the practise I was sweating and thirsty. I had been bowling for 1hr 30minutes. It was very difficult doing a long Bowl because the danger is that it might go in to a ditch. I was also using too much bias and kept on making it go in the ditch. I found doing a medium jack better than all the other ones as I got a good average score. I did not have time to finish everything I had planned but felt that I had achieved a greater understanding about weight, length and bias during the lesson. I need to work on all of these areas but I felt comfortable now in this sport which is new to me. Swimming A03
Swimming
Introduction
I started swimming when I was about five years old and have reached a good standard. I like swimming for leisure as well as doing crash courses. I have certificates to say that I have swum 25 meters but I have swum many more than that. This was because when I went with my primary school where I was in the top group and I had to swim lots of lengths every time I got in the water. I have been regularly taught by my mum who is a good swimmer and she is still trying to teach me.This is a 25m dsitance award.
1st Session
I went to Crook Log Leisure Centre at around four o’clock on the 19th December. The teaching pool was nearly empty so I decided to work in there using the 20m length for all the time swims. I went swimming for one and a half hours. I did two warm up lengths to get myself used to the water. I then did a series of lengths which were timed by my mum. The first length I did was breast stoke. I then did front crawl and after this I did back crawl. Finally I did butterfly. After this my mum helped me improve the strokes. Firstly we worked on the butterfly legs by practising two double leg kicks for every arm pull. We then worked on the breathing by doing one breath every two arm pulls. I was timed doing another length of butterfly. I then worked on my back crawl arms by using more body roll. I then worked on my legs by pointingmy toes a bit more because it helps to propel yourself along. After this I did another timed length of back crawl. I then worked on breast stroke legs and then the arms. I however did not do a timed length again for breast stroke. I finally couldn’t do any more swimming as it had tired me out immensly. I then got changed and went home.
This is how recorded my results for the first session
Stroke | 1st session |
Back stroke | 36.93 seconds |
Back stroke after arms practice | 35.93 seconds |
Back stroke after arms + legs practice | 37.00 seconds |
Breast stroke | 38.17 seconds |
Front Crawl | 38.05 seconds |
Butterfly | 42.47 seconds |
Butterfly after arms + legs practice | 44.47 seconds |

Breast stroke after arms/ legs +breathing practice | 34.57 |
Breast stroke by putting more strokes to one breath | 33.16 |
Front crawl another try to beat my time | 29.41 |
3rd Session
I went to Crook Log Leisure Centre at around four o’clock on the 22nd December. The teaching pool was nearly empty again so I decided to work in there using the 20m length for all the timed swims. I went swimming for one and a half hours. I did two warm up lengths to get myself used to the water. I then did a series of lengths which were timed by my mum. The first length I did was back stroke. I then did front crawl and after this I did breast stroke. Finally I did butterfly. After this my mum helped me improve the strokes. Firstly we worked on my front crawl arms and legs. After this I did breast stroke arms and leg practice by trying to stay just under the water so I did not have to keep going up for air for a long time mum also showed me how to maintain my stroke while taking a breath. I did another timed length of breast stroke. I then worked on butterfly legs by practising two double leg kicks for every arm pull. We then worked on the breathing by doing one breath every two arm pulls. I was timed doing another length of butterfly. Finally couldn’t do any more swimming as it had tired me out again. I then got changed and went home.
Here are my results from the third session
Stroke | 3rd session |
Back stroke | 28.81 |
Front crawl | 27.78 |
Front crawl stretching arms | 26.75 |
Breast stroke after timing of arms+legs practice | 36.82 |
Breast stroke trying to beat time | 38.4 |
Butterfly after arms and legs practice | 43.5 |
Butterfly trying to beat time | 39.2 |
1st Time | 2nd Time | 3rd Time | 4th Time | 5th Time | 6th time
Back Stroke | 36.93 | 35.93 | 37 | 28.99 | 28.81
Front Crawl | 38.05 | 28.57 | 30.86 | 29.41 | 27.78 | 26.74 |
Butterfly | 42.47 | 42.02 | 44.47 | 37.56 | 43.5 | 39.2 |
Breast stroke | 38.17 | 43.21 | 34.57 | 33.16 | 36.82 | 38.4 |
This is how I decided to record my results in order to create a graph.
This graph shows that the time it took for me each time I swam each stroke. The lower down the point is on the graph is the faster I swam. For front crawl I swam my fastest on my last time. For back stroke my 5th time was the fastest. For butterfly my fastest time was on my fourth try. For breast stroke my fastest time was my 4th attempt. The possible reasons why I may have slowed down could be because I was practising new skills or that I was now getting tired.
Evaluation
I have learnt that I need to work on all the strokes and my stamina. I have decided that I need to go swimming once a week and just do lengths starting of with six and then increasing by one each week. I will also carry on trying to improve my times so that I can get them as fast as possible.
I got this certificate when I did a crash course at Lamorbey.
This certificate I got shows that I can perform grade two swimming skills. I have done more grades than this and have reached a higher level of swimming.
